The position of litigation paralegal is a specialized one, focusing almost entirely on the duties associated with the litigation process. Litigation paralegals are responsible for offering aid to litigators in general, and generally organize the myriad details associated with the trial process before, during and after the conclusion of a trial. Litigation paralegals begin their duties associated with a trial from the outset, often performing investigative duties in the pre-claim period, including identifying, locating and interviewing potential witnesses, taking statements, documenting the case investigation, conducting client interviews and performing case assessments. During the next phase of a trial, a litigation paralegal employed by the plaintiff's attorney will very often assist in drafting a summons, complaint and any supporting affidavits. On the defense side, a litigation paralegal will typically investigate the plaintiff's allegations and offer responses. During the discovery, pre-trial, trial, settlement and appeal stages, the litigation paralegal continues with his or her duties, with discovery being a particularly important process and one that is handled largely by an attorney's legal assistant or litigation paralegal. Paralegals will typically provide deposition summaries and continue to assist with discovery, then organize and maintain exhibits to be used during the trial and work as a liaison between the attorney and clients, witnesses and other attorneys.
